One of the challenges of solar energy is the availability of the energy that is generated during the day at times when the sun is not shining. Tesla Motors, the company that until now was known best for the all-electric car, recently introduced the Tesla Powerall, a wall mounted, lithium-ion electric battery for homes and small businesses, and the Tesla Powerpack, a heftier version of the same core product designed for utility-scale use. These batteries are designed to charge using the electricity generated from solar panels and is potentially a game changer as far as the ability of facilities to use solar power to seriously reduce the amount of electricity they purchase from utilities. There are different battery models for backup functions and for where the power stored during the day can be used for daily cycle operations.
In a previous post, I wrote about how solar power is increasingly a viable solution for electricity. The announcement last week by Tesla appears to provide a solution to one piece of the puzzle.
